September 28th, 2017 – Raleigh, NC  — Compass Records celebrated a historic group of wins at the 2017 IBMA Awards. Newest Compass artist Molly Tuttle made history as the first ever female winner for GUITARIST OF THE YEAR, the final instrumental category to honor a female musician.

Two big wins for Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper as INSTRUMENTAL GROUP OF THE YEAR and INSTRUMENTAL RECORDED PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR for the title track from his recent album, FIDDLER’S DREAM.  A family effort of sorts, a pop-grass cover of The Bee Gees’ “I’ve Just Gotta Get A Message” from Bobby Osborne‘s album, ORIGINAL, which featured guest appearances from producer, Alison Brown, as well as Claire Lynch, Trey Hensley, Rob Ickes, Stuart Duncan, and Sierra Hull took home his first ever IBMA Award – the prize for RECORDED EVENT OF THE YEAR.

At the Awards ceremony, the IBMA audience was treated to a rare reunion between IBMA Hall of Fame Members Bobby Osborne and his brother Sonny Osborne leading a crew of players in a rousing rendition of “Rocky Top” to celebrate its 50th Anniversary.

The Awards also coincided with the launch of the the new John Hartford signature low tuned banjo, the Julia Belle.  The Julia Belle was created by Deering Banjos in collaboration with Alison Brown who worked with the Hartford family to adapt John’s artwork into the banjo’s inlays and details.  To celebrate the launch, Alison put together a music video project with all of the first female IBMA instrumentalist winners, Alison BrownMissy Raines, Sierra Hull and Becky Buller to perform a cover of John Hartford’s song “The Girl I Left Behind Me”.
