A word from Alison:
Hi Banjo Pickers,
I’m coming to San Diego to play at the Museum of Making Music and, since we have a day off, I thought it would be fun to put together a banjo workshop. I’m a great believer in the responsibility that each one of us has to help pass folk music traditions along and I’m still grateful to the many San Diego pickers who spent time helping me when I was learning – so I’m excited to have a chance to pass some of what I know along to you.
The workshop will last for 2 hours and will cover a lot of different techniques needed for banjo picking in the 21st century. I don’t think you can play 3 finger style banjo without a solid foundation in Scruggs style so that’s where we’ll start, making sure everyone has a good handle on the 3 Ts: timing, tone and taste. From there we’ll venture into melodic style, single string techniques and chord melodies. I am not a big theory person – most of my learning was and is done by ear – but we’ll touch on some basic concepts to the extent they help demystify jazz and altered chords. I’ll have some tab for you but it would be a good idea to bring a recording device.
Thanks and I hope to see you on May 4.
